Collector's Note: An Arkansas Adventure, The Joy of Digging for Quartz

As a docent at the Dallas Perot Museum of Nature and Science, one of the most common questions from the public in the Lyda Hill Gems and Minerals Hall is “How do you find these?” And it's the same with members of the staff who often ask the same thing.

This question sparked my decision to offer a mineral digging experience that would be easy on first-timers and not too far away. I had gone digging for quartz at the Zigras mine in Garland County, Arkansas, before and thought it would be a great first dig not only for the Perot Museum staff and docents, but also for our friends in the Arlington (Texas) Gem and Mineral Club.


Gail Copus Spann and her husband, Jim, are collectors of fine minerals from worldwide localities and have immersed themselves in the hobby during the past dozen years.
