The Art of Mines in a Bottle

Most of us have seen objects such as old-time sailing ships implausibly occupying the interiors of narrow-necked bottles. It takes skill, planning, patience, and time to create this type of art, and once it is placed in the bottle, its fate is sealed (no pun intended). The 2016 Munich Mineral Show (Mineralientage München) had a display of mining bottles from the collection of the late Dr. Erika Pohl-Ströher, of Switzerland. Many visitors at the show were captivated by this distinctive type of folk art. 

 

Susan Robinson is a freelance artist specializing in painting mineral and gem specimens as well as birds and wildlife.

Peter Huber and his wife, Simone, are retired teachers who have collected minerals since 1966 and are specialists in historical mineralogy and in various fields of mining art.
