Earth Science Symbols of the Midwestern United States

Midwest minerals are the theme for the 2017 Tucson Gem and Mineral Show.® The show has defined the Midwest in a broader sense than is typical and includes sixteen states that occupy the central region of the United States. The diversity of minerals from this expanded area includes those found in metallic ore veins as well as igneous, metamorphic, and sedimentary rocks. The range of fossils available in this region includes Cambrian invertebrates, Mesozoic dinosaurs, and mammalian vertebrates. Most of the legislatures of these states have approved some Earth science symbols—whether gems, rocks, minerals, fossils, dinosaurs, or even jewelry.

Mark Ivan Jacobson, a consulting editor of Rocks & Minerals, specializes in pegmatites and their histories of exploitation.
