Diamond Legends & Tall Tales

Today, we recognize that diamonds are found in many countries around the world, and micro-sized diamonds from outer space have been discovered in meteorites, as well. However, the early legends of diamond occurrences and the stone's magical powers were fanciful and filled with superstition and outright subterfuge. The retelling of those myths, seen with the hindsight of modern knowledge, is an enjoyable diversion for collectors and students of gemstone history alike.

Tony Nikischer is the president of Excalibur Mineral Corporation one of the world's leading suppliers of rare mineral species for researchers, museums, and private collectors. He is also the publisher of the monthly periodical Mineral News and chairman of the nonprofit Hudson Institute of Mineralogy. The mineral nikischerite was named in his honor in 2003.
