German Mineral Artist Jörg Thomas (b. 1948)

When I think of pastels and their use to create paintings, dreamy landscapes come to mind, with impressionistic touches of color and little detail. Jörg Thomas has taken on the challenge of depicting minerals and their fine details with this medium and has masterfully captured the essence of each specimen he illustrates. What appears to be done in another art medium, such as oil, acrylic paints, or even watercolor, is actually done in crayons made of compressed and colored chalk.

Susan Robinson is a freelance artist specializing in painting mineral and gem specimens as well as birds and wildlife.
