Who's Who in Mineral Names: George W. Robinson

(b. 1946)

Georgerobinsonite, Pb4(CrO4)2(OH)2FCl, is a lead chromate found in a matrix of silicified rocks with other secondary lead minerals, including caledonite, cerussite, diaboleite, leadhillite, matlockite, murdochite, pinalite, wulfenite, and yedlinite, at the Mammoth–St. Anthony mine, Tiger, Pinal County, Arizona (Cooper et al. 2011). It is the ninth new mineral species described from this locality. It occurs as intergrowths of thin-tabular orange crystals less that 0.1 mm across. Although the type specimen was collected in the 1940s, it was only recently identified as a new species and described, named, and published. The mineral is named after Dr. George W. Robinson in recognition of his contributions as a mineral museum curator, researcher, teacher, and field collector.
