Thirty-seventh Rochester Mineralogical Symposium: Contributed Papers in Specimen Mineralogy—Part 3: 37th Rochester Mineralogical Symposium

THE TWENTY-SEVENTH TECHNICAL SESSION of the Rochester Mineralogical Symposium was held on 16 April 2010. Eight abstracts were accepted and presented as oral papers. The review panel consisted of Dr. Steven Chamberlain, New York State Museum; Dr. Carl Francis, Harvard University; Dr. Sarah Hanson, Adrian College; Dr. Marian Lupulescu, New York State Museum; and Dr. George Robinson, Michigan Technological University.

Kinoite, Ca2Cu2Si3O8(OH)4, was first identified in an exploratory drill core from the northern Santa Rita Mountains, Pima County, Arizona (Anthony and Laughon 1977). The second reported occurrence was from the Laurium mine on the Keweenaw Peninsula, Michigan (Ruotsala and Wilson 1977). Subsequently, the mineral has been reported from the Christmas mine in Gila County, Arizona, and the Centennial No. 2, Kearsage No. 4, and La Salle mines on the Keweenaw Peninsula, Michigan. In Michigan, kinoite is found within filled vesicles in the Kearsarge amygdaloidal flow of the approximately 1.1 Ga Portage Lake Volcanics. It is associated with epidote, chlorite, pumpellyite, saponite, datolite, native copper, and silver.
