Tasmanian Mineral Artist: Steve Sorrell (b. 1954)

Even though Steve Sorrell has been painting for only eight years, he has been avidly sketching and cartooning since his early childhood. He enrolled in several adult education classes, learning the techniques of using oils and watercolors. Sorrell employs both of those mediums in his art as well as acrylics, pencils, and colored pencils, but he prefers watercolors for his paintings. He also took a course titled “Marine Life Drawing,” in 2009, and thus created the image of “Herman” the hermit crab carrying his crab meat tin home on his back, which can be viewed on both Mindat and Sorrell's websites.

Susan Robinson is a freelance artist specializing in painting mineral and gem specimens as well as birds and wildlife.
