Mineralogical Trips to the Deccan Traps India 1991–2008

Since the 1970s, there has been an abundance of mineral specimens from India appearing at mineral shows. Unfortunately, the locality information on the labels has often been very general. In the early years, the location was usually given as “Poona (also Poonah), India,” which is far from precise. Poona (now Pune) is only one of many localities in the 200,000 square miles covered by the basalt layers of the Deccan Traps. Many other famous mineral localities belong to this area: Aurangabad, Mumbai, Jalgaon, and Nasik, to name a few.
