Artist Kelly Shultz

(b. 1962)

Sophia Shultz has been a lifelong mineral collector, accumulating rocks and minerals since the tender age of five. “I grew up in Chester County, Pennsylvania, which is noted for metamorphic rocks of every kind; my parents, while supportive of my puzzling ungirlish hobby, had no knowledge of [local] collecting sites, so my collection consisted of those things provided by my uncle and random finds of gneisses, quartzites, and so on.” She says she is much more interested in the “geological big picture” and enjoys pointing out road-cut features to friends as she drives along the Pennsylvania Turnpike. Shultz frequently visits the Mindat website (www.mindat.org) to do research and to chat with other collectors; it was her friends there who encouraged her to begin doing mineral paintings. She says, “I have finally joined two of my very favorite interests, and it has become a wonderful thing!”
Susan Robinson is a freelance artist specializing in painting mineral and gem specimens as well as birds and wildlife.
